Our History

Not many fuel oil companies can say they've been around since 1933 — but Skaggs-Walsh is proud to celebrate its Diamond Anniversary. Why have our customers trusted us for so long? One reason is that we're family owned and operated, so we know our customers and their heating systems. We also think it's because — unlike other dealers — we are a "full service" comfort company. From automatic fuel delivery to oil tank replacement ... from comprehensive service plans to convenient budget plans ... from installation of high-efficiency heating equipment to annual tune-ups and efficiency tests, Skaggs-Walsh does it all!

75 years of quality.

The year was 1933. America was in the middle of the Great Depression. Bonnie and Clyde went on a gun-toting crime spree in the Midwest. Franklin D. Roosevelt became the new president. And "King Kong," the first film to play the new Radio City Music Hall, was released.

That same year, Norris Skaggs and Stanley Walsh saw the great opportunity to convert residents of New York City from dirty, old-fashioned coal to clean, modern oil heat, and they began their business installing oil burners.

In the 1950s, Fred Heaney purchased Skaggs-Walsh, which he ran until 1960, when his son, Peter, took over. The company doubled in size when it purchased Sunrise Oil in 1980, at which time it also moved from its former location in Long Island City to its present headquarters and 400,000-gallon terminal in College Point. Several more acquisitions followed, increasing the company's influence in Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Long Island — but never diminishing the company's commitment to serving its neighbors with old-fashioned customer care and concern.

In 1994, Peter's daughter, Alison Heaney, who had been Skaggs-Walsh's sales manager, became the company's owner and president.

Seventy-five years after introducing the benefits of oil heat to coal-shoveling New Yorkers, Skaggs-Walsh is seeking new ways to help its customers get the most value for their energy dollars.

Our Own Storage Facility

Skaggs-Walsh owns and operates its own state-of-the-art oil storage facility, which can store up to 400,000 gallons of fuel oil. So you can be sure we'll have a constant supply of top-grade oil heat to meet your needs ... no matter how cold and long the winter is. In fact, in our 75 years of business we've never run out of oil and we've always been able to make deliveries to our customers.

Having our own storage facility helps keep your prices down, too. That's because when we buy in bulk we pass the savings on to you!

Not every oil heat dealer out there has their own storage facility — but here at Skaggs-Walsh, it's one more way we go the extra mile to serve you better.
